The down with the word PLUSSIZE movement is ridiculous.

As plus size women, I am so sick of hearing and seeing all of the down with the word plus size movements. I am sick of hearing the word plus size should go away because it is negative and meaningless, I personally and thoroughly DISAGREE.

The word plus size should not go away, what should go away is the negative, outdated and meaningless ways plus size women are treated by society, media, Hollywood and the fashion industries. Changing the word from plus size to extended size (**rolling my eyes** isn’t that the same thing?) or getting rid of it completely is not going to change anything and to think otherwise is just outlandish and ludicrous. Change is only going to happen when the word plus size is no longer ingrained in us by society to be a negative, shameful word or label.

So, people say that the plus size distinction marginalizes women; once again this is an untrue statement. People with bias and elitist views on the world marginalize plus size, fat, and or big women. Something else I have notice is that the loudest voices in this plus size is negative movement tend to be people who are not plus size. For example, model Stefania Ferrario (this is not a dig at her) started the #droptheplus movement. So I went to her Instagram to check her out, my jaw dropped because for me as a size 22/24 plus size women, she is NOT plus size so of course she does not want to be called plus size. I am sure she means well with this hashtag, but for actual plus size women it does nothing to help us actual plus size women in society to not be looked upon through negative lenses.

It also upsets me to see these same models and influencers who are complaining about the word plus size and starting movements to end the word, are some of the same ones taking jobs and cashing checks from companies who specifically target plus size, full size, fat or whatever term you feel comfortable using women. If you have such issues, stop taking those jobs. This will help open up the market to actual plus size women to get these jobs, and then you will truly be helping your plus size sisters.

People need to stop getting up in arms over a phrase and helpful label (I personally don’t want to spend hours on hours in stores digging and sorting through clothing because they are all mixed together, because God forbid we have a plus size section and I don’t want the plus size section in the in a dark deep corner as well.)

What we should be up in arms over is why, when a store has a plus size section it is in the deepest and darkest corner in the store. Why fashion house continue to use non- plus size women to sell plus size clothing.

Why society and media still uses the word plus size in negative ways. Why non- plus size women, actresses, models and influencers are continually making and starting up movements to get rid of a word they are not. Why we actual plus size women jump on their band wagon and support them. Let’s be up in arms for daughters who have low self-esteem because the world continually tells them because they are plus size that they are not good enough.

So please stop trying to get rid of a word that I and so many others have worked their asses off to love and love ourselves, when you have a society telling us that we are not good enough.

The word “plus size” does not discriminate and segregate people…people discriminate and segregate people.

Just my confession,

Nikki

P.S. I am starting my own movement #WearePLUS
